Location & Story of the Portofino Hotel & Marina, Redondo Beach
The Portofino Hotel & Marina is located in Redondo Beach Marina, directly on the water overlooking the Pacific. It’s just 7 miles from the South Coast Botanic Garden, about 10-miles away from Inglewood, and within a 20-minute drive of Los Angeles International Airport. Both valet and self-parking are available across the hotel for a fee.
The Portofino Hotel, initially called the Portofino Inn, was opened in 1962 by racecar enthusiast Mary Davis. She was one of the country’s first female racecar drivers, so the hotel used to be a hangout for racers. It was inspired by an Italian coastal village with the same name and soon became a first-class getaway and one of the three largest hotels in the South Bay. The Portofino with its 225-boat marina, bar, shop and restaurant, 25-unit yacht brokerage, and the fuel dock was among the Southland’s most popular attractions. Davis owned the hotel for more than 20 years, she sold it in 1986. Since then, the hotel has been rebuilt and renovated many times (last time in 2018), including a new lobby and Living Room lobby lounge, refreshed guest rooms and baths, 5 new suites, and an 8,000-square-foot conference center.
Nowadays, the hotel offers great options for out-of-towners, corporate gatherings, beach cruisers, and health and wellness activities, the most exciting among them — wedding packages. The newlyweds will celebrate their weddings at Portofino Hotel Redondo Beach surrounded by tropical landscapes and spectacular vistas of Palos Verdes, Catalina Island, and the Pacific Ocean.

Bridal & Groom’s Preparation Areas for Weddings at Portofino Hotel Redondo Beach
The hotel has 161 rooms, among them 5 luxury suites. Most of the rooms are with ocean views. If you choose, for example, the hotel’s Endless Celebration Wedding Package, you’ll get a stay in the Oceanview Deluxe Room for free, as well as special honeymoon amenities. The Deluxe Room is a large (more than 250 sqm) room on the upper floor of the hotel with a king-size bed, balcony, and a great panoramic view of the Pacific.
The bride you see in the photos got prepared in a more modest room yet spacious enough to accommodate all of her bridal party. The interiors of the hotels also give you plenty of opportunities to create stunning photos: we hung up the dress in the lobby in front of the giant window to get interesting shots. We also snapped some shots in the corridor featuring the nautical theme of the hotel. As per the catering agreement, the hotel allows photography in the main lobby, at the Living Room lobby lounge, and at the front entrance to the hotel, so inform your hotel contact person if you’d like to snap pictures somewhere else at the hotel. As for us, we were able to use many locations on the property for photos, uninterrupted.
The hotel also offers bridal luncheons and organizes groomsmen outings: there are lots of group activities like the pool and bike rentals for free.
First Look & Couple Shots at the Portofino Hotel Redondo Beach
The couple in the photos decided not to do a First Look, they preferred to see each other at the altar of the Wayfarers Chapel, also called “the Glass Church”. It’s a stunning church in Rancho Palos Verdes, about 20 minutes by car from the hotel. We had enough time to take pictures on the chapel grounds.
Still, if you decide on the ceremony at the hotel, there are many nice spots for the photo session, you’ll find a million locations. For example, you will be only 15 minutes from the Redondo Beach Pier. Use the opp and just walk along the marina, watching the sunset and taking many beautiful sunset pictures as we did.
Another opp that we took is to snap some couple shots in another great location of the Palos Verdes: Malaga Cove Plaza. It was on the way to the Wayfarer Church and just a 10-minutes drive from the hotel. At the Malaga Cove Plaza, there are many beautiful backgrounds to choose from and plenty of free parking: it’s important if you care about your wedding timeline. They are historic brick buildings in Spanish Renaissance style. If you exchange your vows not at the hotel, but somewhere else nearby, you can just stop there for a small photo session as we did. There are lots of great backdrops like an Italian-styled marble fountain, many walkways & arches, plus beautiful ivy and bougainvillea shrubs in full bloom. And all this in close proximity to the Portofino Hotel.
Wedding Party & Family Pictures at the Portofino Hotel & Marina
We snapped group shots already in the limousine that brought the bride and her wedding party to the Wayfarers. Also, many group photos were taken right at the ceremony site, in front of the Wayfarers chapel’s entrance.
As for the Portofino hotel, there is always an opp to take pictures during the cocktail hour on the Pacific Ballroom Terrace overlooking the King Harbor, where kayaks and yachts regularly make their way out to sea. And don’t forget about the lobby of the hotel: romantic or formal pictures can be taken there.
Portofino Hotel Redondo Beach Weddings Ceremony Sites
Actually, there are three ceremony sites at the hotel. One of them is the outdoor Seaside Lawn. With its approximate 1,500 sq. ft, this space can host up to 200 guests. It’s a great option if you prefer to be surrounded by towering palm trees and waterside backdrops while exchanging vows. The spot is quite secluded, far from the hotel bustle. The venue will provide you with a white wedding arch and white garden chairs. The hotel wedding coordinator will offer a tent in case of bad weather. The Seaside Lawn is also used for a cocktail hour in between the ceremony and the reception. So, the guests will enjoy the ocean breeze and later a stunning sunset view.
If you decide on an indoor ceremony, you have to choose between the Bayside and Pacific ballrooms. I’ll talk about them further because one of these rooms the couple in the photos had chosen for their reception.
Reception Sites of the Portofino Hotel & Marina, Redondo Beach
The reception sites are located separately from the main building of the hotel, in the Pavilion — a relatively new modern building featuring panoramic views of the sea. So, you will feel quite secluded and uninterrupted in your joy.
The Bayside and Pacific Ballrooms are slightly different according to the space they offer. The Bayside is bigger and can accommodate about 300 or 240 seated guests. Right next to her you’ll enter the Pacific Ballroom. The main difference is that the Pacific ballroom has a spacious terrace or outdoor balcony. It’s very convenient when after having their cocktails on the terrace the guest might flow to the indoor area for dinner. Both ballrooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Ballroom in particular can be used as two separate venues with a movable wall between the spaces.
The couple in the photos celebrated their reception in the Pacific Ballroom. Its interiors are typical for ballrooms, light-colored walls, hanging chandeliers, and plenty of light, perfectly suitable for classic elegant dinner or romantic intimate celebration. There is a large dance floor in the middle of the room. The bar was set up right outside the front of the hall. The sweetheart table was placed in front of the giant window. It was really a lot of space for the guests to move and dance. The ballroom doors opened up so that guests could wander in and out, and won’t stay outdoors the whole evening and deal with temperature differences. In the evening, the sunset and lights of Palos Verdes create a magical ambiance for a wedding.
